Introducing CellScope DIRECT – New Remote Care Program

Our vision at CellScope is to improve the doctor-patient relationship by increasing patient engagement, helping doctors provide the highest quality care to their patients and offering families radical convenience.

We are excited to announce the nationwide launch our new virtual care platform to bring families and doctors one step closer to this vision. Our CellScope DIRECT platform enables doctors to provide families with remote care for common conditions that usually require an in office visit.

What sets CellScope DIRECT apart from other remote care platforms is that we have built smart mobile tools to enable patients to capture and share diagnostic quality images of their sick kiddos. Our first tool, Oto for Families, enables parents to take images of their child’s eardrum at home and receive a diagnosis or treatment follow-up.

CellScope DIRECT aims to save patients and physicians time, enable high quality care and reduce over prescription of antibiotics through remote care.  We currently have practices using our platform in over 9 states across pediatrics, family medicine and otolaryngology (ENT).

Read a Q&A with one of the first doctors on CellScope DIRECT, Dr. Chad Rudnick, about how he is leading the new wave of pediatrics at his practice, Boca VIPediatrics.

Navigating ear wax with the Oto

Not all ears look the same inside. If you see something in the ear, chances are it’s earwax.  While it might be a little gross to look at, ear wax helps keep your ears healthy and clean. At CellScope, we’re big fans of ear wax EXCEPT when it gets in the way of taking an ear exam. It can be frustrating when you finally get your child to sit still for an ear exam only to hear from the doctor that there’s too much wax to see the eardrum. Earwax_Detector

‘Oto for Clinicians’ Tips: Capture a still frame from an ear video

We’ve designed the Oto to enhance the ear exam experience for patients and physicians. Since younger patients aren’t always thrilled with having their ears checked, getting a still picture of the eardrum can be tough. We recommend taking a video first and then capturing a frame later. The best part? Send your patient home with an image of his or her ear by emailing directly from the app.

Capture a still frame from a video exam in 5 steps:

1. Take a video and head to the Exam Review screen by selecting “Review.”

Don’t Get Stuck With Sick Kiddos on Your Summer Vacation

After weeks of planning, scheduling time off work, planning around your kids’ endless activities and locking down on an affordable (hopefully!) travel deal, summer vacation with your family is a much anticipated affair. Yet, we all know airplanes, cruise ships and hotel rooms are petri dishes for germs – just like daycare, the school bus or the local shopping mall. There is nothing that can ruin the excitement of summer vacation more quickly than having your kids get sick and struggling to figure out what’s wrong with them or worrying about finding treatment far from home.

Vacations are supposed to be an escape from everyday worries and a time for fun.  With the Oto we hope to help keep vacations that way.

Consult a doctor even when miles away from home – A doctor’s opinion is never more than two hours away!  If your child begins to complain or show signs of ear pain, simply take out your Oto from your travel bag.  Take an ear video and send it to one of our certified doctors for an immediate answer.

Get peace of mind when traveling with a sick child – Even if your child has been diagnosed with an ear infection prior to your flight and your pediatrician has prescribed ‘watchful watching,’ a stress-free vacation is still achievable.   Whether you are on the beach, at Disneyland or camping in the wilderness, simply take an video of your kid’s ear each day and send to one of our doctors or your own pediatrician for follow-up.*

Get advice on whether to reschedule your flight – If your child develops an infection within hours of your scheduled trip, consider postponing your flight. Ear infections usually subside within a day or two, and sparing your child unnecessary ear pain may be well worth the delay. Cabin pressure can be particularly uncomfortable at the onset of an ear infection when the eardrum is most sensitive.  Send an ear exam with the Oto to one of our doctors and they will help you determine whether you should reschedule the flight or not.

Don’t already have an Oto?  Order your Oto today.

*Sending an ear exam to our doctors with the Oto requires wi-fi or access to a data plan.
